2013 ASDA Annual Session

From March 6-9, the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine sent six of our ASDA Executive Committee Members to the 2013 Annual Session in Atlanta, GA. During this event, members attended the House of Delegates (the body that creates the official bylaws and processes of ASDA on a national level), met with true leaders in the field of dental research and clinical practice, and discussed the exciting track MUSC is taking in regards to dental education with our colleagues from other dental schools across the US. This week proved that while there are challenges that our profession may face in the coming years, we have a strong, organized voice for dentistry that will provide a united front as we enter the future. In addition to discussing the national aspects of dentistry, the attendees also experienced informative break-out sessions about topics ranging from malpractice insurance and residency requirements to how our practices will adapt to emerging dental trends. Keeping Charleston Beautiful

On Saturday, March 2, a group of MUSC ASDA members got together through Keeping Charleston Beautiful to clean an area downtown under the interstate. The organization was nice enough to provide trash bags and trash pickers and even collected the gathered trash that we left on the side of the road when we were done. Thank you to all of the volunteers and to Keeping Charleston Beautiful for doing just that!

2013 Alumni Golf Tournament

Alumni Weekend came to a close with MUSC ASDA’s Alumni Golf Tournament on Sunday, February 24th at The Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, South Carolina. A group of 60 alumni, student, and faculty golfers partook in the event, which featured a captain’s choice golf tournament, a raffle, a barbeque cookout, and some (unexpected!) beautiful Charleston sunshine. Although the course had received 4 inches of rain the day before, it was in great condition. Winning the tournament with a score of 59 after 18 holes was a CDM student team comprised of Brett Henderson, Charlie Moore, Daniel Knause, and Whitney Simons. This event would not have been possible without the support of our gracious sponsors: Patterson Dental, Harbor Contracting, Southeast Transitions, and Wells Fargo. The ASDA chapter of the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine would like to give a huge thanks to these sponsors as well as the great people at Stono Ferry and everyone who played in the event!

26th Annual ASDA Vendor Fair

On February 21st, 2013, ASDA hosted its 26th Annual Vendor Fair to kick off Alumni Weekend! 30 vendors were welcomed into the first floor of the dental clinic, where students of all classes perused the displays. This event coincided with the 3rd Annual James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine Scholar’s Day, so our third year dental students simultaneously presented their research in the Drug Discovery Building to faculty, staff, and their peers. ASDA sponsored a delicious lunch from Hubee D’s before the keynote speech for Scholar’s Day from Dr. Martha Somerman, Director, National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIH). Thank you to everyone who made this event a great success! Also, congratulations to the winners of the Scholar’s Day awards.

National Advocacy Week

MUSC held its annual National Advocacy Week during the week of November 12-16, 2012. It began with a session for the first year students from Dr. Daniel West, a recent graduate of the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, regarding Dentistry 101. Dr. West described the intricacies of dentistry outside of the classroom. He explained the tripartite infrastructure of the American Dental Association and, more importantly, how the benefits trickle down all the way to the student. He explained the significance of Organized Dentistry and its role in the future of the dental profession. The second day was a meet-and-greet with SC State Representative Peter McCoy. The entire student body got to participate in a Q&A session about the concerns facing the MUSC Dental Student, both financially and professionally. The session opened the door for Dean Jack Sanders to open discussions with the SC Budget Committee regarding a positive financial outcome for future student tuition. The third and final day was a talk from Dr. Bruce Hutchison, SC ADPAC District Representative, and Dr. Hal Fair, SC ADA District Representative. They focused on ADPAC and the significance of being active, even at the student level. We want to congratulate the freshman class for obtaining the highest participation in our ADPAC/DenPAC drive, with 52 members of their class of 72 students. Total ADPAC membership totaled 159 students for the 2012-2013 school year. Thank you to the MUSC ASDA Legislative Committee for your help in hosting awareness events! Also, many thanks to all the sponsors, including: South Carolina Dental Association, American Dental Political Action Committee, and MUSC Dental Student Alumni Council. We look forward to a strong, positive, professional experience at State Lobby Day on April 10, 2013.
